
The ChEETAh SIV teleconference held on 12th August, 2020 at the Seminar room of the Paediatric Surgery Unit, Department of Surgery, College of Medicine, University of Lagos. The conference which had in attendance forty-five (45) participants which included Doctors and Nurses from Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), representatives of the other three (3) spokes (i.e. LASUTH, OAUTHC and UITH who joined online) and the Administrative Staff of the Lagos Hub; was geared towards introducing the participants to the ChEETAh Trial and to also intimate them with their responsibilities as members of the team for the study.
Mr. Aneel Bhangu (FRCS), led the participants in understanding the ChEETAh Trial Design, randomization process and the sample size for the trial. The theatre practices associated with the trial were also explained by the ChEETAh Champion, Dr. Rufus Ojewola. These practices include change of gloves and separate sterile instruments as a means of reducing Surgical Site Infections (SSIs) in clean-contaminated, contaminated or dirty abdominal surgery. Donna Smith, shed light on the ChEETAh Patient Pathway with explicit explanations on the Consent for ChEETAh, ChEETAh Operation Stickers, ChEETAh Register, ChEETAh Trial Number Stickers, ChEETAh CRF Booklets and ChEETAh 30-day follow-up script and how they should be utilized.
The Hub Lead for NIHR GSU, Lagos Hub, Prof. Adesoji Ademuyiwa explained the ChEETAh Training Week schedule for the team members. The training week is prior to commencing patient enrolment and the full theatre team would be trained on the use of WHO Checklist, change of gloves and instruments, completion of operation note and completion of theatre log book.
The ChEETAh Patients’ Follow up was explained by the Principal Investigator for Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Dr. (Mrs.) Lara Williams. Participants were enlightened on Patients’ follow up on day of discharge and 30-days post-surgery. The Time-points, online training and Green Light were discussed by Donna Smith after which there was a session of questions and answers led by Prof. Adesoji Ademuyiwa and Dr. Rufus Ojewola.
